How to Date Someone at Work

Dating someone at work is never a good idea, but the fact is that it happens. When you spend a ton of time in the office, you are bound to think that someone is attractive or charming somewhere along the way. While it isn't impossible to date someone from your office, it can be a challenge if you don't know what to do. There is a certain way you have to approach this process so that you minimize any potential damage that may come about from it. Here is a guide explaining how to date someone from work so you can have the most enjoyable experience possible with it.

Date Someone on Your Level

If you are going to date someone from your place of employment, you need to make sure he or she is on the same level with you. That way you can't get fired if you break up with the person. If you are a divorce paralegal, you would not want to date the divorce attorney that is in charge of you. If you are a medical assistant, you would not want to date a doctor in the building. It is always more tempting to date someone in a higher position than you, but you just can't do that. You never know if or when something might go wrong in a relationship, and then you could be putting your job at risk by having a relationship. Date at your level and you will never have to worry about that.

Don't Talk about Work on Your Dates

It is fairly common to want to talk to someone you are dating about work, but you need to try to avoid that if you are dating someone from the same office as you. This is essentially gossiping about staff members, which is strictly forbidden in most work environments. Do we all do it? Of course. You just have to try to minimize the amount of bad things you say about other people on your dates. That could come back to bite you in the butt in the long run. If you can keep your work life and your dating life separate from one another, you will have the best chance of enjoying the time you spend with your partner.

Try to Work in Separate Departments

If you have a chance to work in a different area than the person you are dating, take up the opportunity. That way if you are in a fight, you don't have to see the other person while you are working. You can both go about your jobs the way you need to, and then you can meet each other after the work day is done. Most couples do not last long working in the exact same office for long periods of time, but there are some that do. My husband and I see each other 23 to 24 hours a day, and we get along great. You just have to test the waters and see if the same theory applies to the person you are dating.

Dating someone you work with is not easy and it isn't exactly a wise decision on your part. If you think you can't live without someone from the office though, you at least need to make sure you maintain your professionalism at work. It is possible to keep your job and your partner at the same time if you learn to balance the two of them. Keep your work in mind at all times, and you should be able to get through this process relatively unscathed.
